Things To Do With Your Dog in Benicia, CA

With its vast and picturesque hiking trails, parks, and waterside location, it’s no secret that Benicia, CA, is a great destination to spend the day – but did you know that Benicia is one of the most dog friendly cities around? It’s true – we were even voted the fourth most dog-friendly city in the world by Dog Fancy Magazine, and we have an annual “‘Dog Day” event to celebrate! Plus, Benicia is an easy day trip to make from anywhere in the Bay Area. Why not take your furry friend for a day of fun in the sun in Benicia?

Here are some of the most dog-friendly places our city has to offer:

  • Carquinez Strait Trail – This 3.1 mile trail offers a beautiful view of the Carquinez Strait and allows your furry friends to hike alongside you, as long as they are kept on leash! This trail features sweeping views of nature that is native to Benicia, including wildflowers that can only be found within the city limits. Overall, this trail is a stunning destination for you and your canine friends to enjoy!
  • First Street Beach – If you’re looking to take your pup for a dip in the water, know that dogs are allowed to swim off-leash at this beach in the area before the Promenade that heads to the pier. You must keep your dog on a leash until you reach the beach area – but after that, your pup can roam free! While there, take a stroll along the shoreline or take in the sweeping views of the Carquinez Strait.
  • Benicia State Recreation Area – This recreation area is the perfect place to stay active with your furry friend! Benicia State Recreation Area boasts nearly two and a half miles of bike paths and roads suitable for hiking and adventuring. While dogs must remain on a leash that is under six feet, the grassy hillsides and beach access make this a great place to stay active with your pup.
  • Phenix Dog Park – Named after the late police dog “Phenix”, this dog park is open for community use and is the perfect place for your dog to be able to run around off-leash with other furry friends. This park provides over an acre of open space for your pup to play. As a bonus, the park is fully fenced and has sections to separate small dogs from larger dogs.
  • Lucca Bar and Grill – After a long day of hiking, take your pup out to relax and eat on the patio of dog-friendly Lucca Bar and Grill. With amenities such as a beer garden and live music as well as a menu featuring beef and duck sliders, cheese boards, ribeye steak, fried chicken, salad nicoise, and more, Lucca Bar and Grill is the perfect dinner destination for both you and your furry friend!
